What changes when we learn to pay attention differently?

You walk into a forest at night.

Your first impulse is probably to make the darkness go away. You reach for a flashlight, walk faster, stick to the familiar path.

With the flashlight, you get a bright circle, and everything outside it turns blacker than it was.

What if you stayed long enough to let your eyes adapt?

At first you see almost nothing. Then trees begin to separate from one another. The fireflies appear. The ground becomes easier to follow. You realize there was always more light than you thought.

The forest didn't change.

You did.
